I am the Explorer
Leeroy New’s first permanent structure
Leeroy New’s I am the Explorer is the main architectural feature of the museum site. The indoor museum is shaped like a spaceship, as it invites children to take a journey through their imaginations and to stimulate their curiosity.
This will be Leeroy New’s first permanent and architectural installation. His practice of reusing plastic for his works and installations aligns with the Biennale’s commitment to sustainability and care for the environment.
Leeroy also created “Mycelium Clouds”, a site-specific installation calling to mind mycelium, the root-like network of fungus made up of tubular filaments known as hyphae. Beneath forest soils, this network enables communication and distribution of water and nutrients amon g plant life. It is also known to keep climate-warming carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere.
Rising from the ground of a grass meadow, the Mycelium Clouds swirl above our heads and persuade us into child-like wonder. In the face of a global climate emergency, such reimaginings cultivate hope for a better world and seed possibilities of a sustainable future.
The Artists
Leeroy New is an artist-designer whose practice overlaps and intersects with film, theater, product design, and fashion. His immersive installations use a variety of found objects directly sourced from the immediate material culture of his current environment.
