Lilim
Don Bryan Bunag
Don Bunag’s work Lilim (shade) is an installation of made from fabric kites and is intended as a place of rest and tranquility.
He draws inspiration from the kite-flying festivals that are organized yearly in his hometown in Bulacan, where a massive airport is set to be built. Through this installation, he evokes treasured childhood memories, while also wondering, what will happen now to those events, now that the skies may no longer be free for children to fly their kites.
The darkness of the installation also evokes the shade and mystery of forests. Children are free to enter and rest under the shade of these kites, a stark contrast to the brightness of the outdoors. This artwork challenges children to think differently, and reassures that dark is not necessarily scary.
