Nanay Pawikan
Laurence Vallières
Laurence participated in the Biennale as one of our Resident Artists. She chose to work on a piece that will give attention to the pawikan, or Philippine sea turtle. Five of the seven known marine turtle species can be found in the Philippines, and all are endangered. Sightings of pawikans are becoming more and more limited for a number of reasons, mostly human-caused, from ecological destruction to the poaching and hunting of these wonderful animals.
Site-specific and ephemeral, here piece “Nanay Pawikan” (Mother Turtle) from its creation to inevitable disintegration and transformation, serves as a metaphor for the plight, hope and future of these magnificent creatures.
The Artist
Laurence Vallières’ work involves large-scale animal sculptures that are whimsical and larger than life, usually made from cardboard. These monumental sculptures show creatures that we don’t always see in our everyday life in the city; knowing these animals even through art helps us place greater value in building a sustainable world for us and those that live alongside us.
